To continue to improve affordability and accessibility, Metro Transit is considering several proposed updates to fares and the fare payment system such as express bus fares would become $3 all the time and $1 youth fares would be extended to riders up to 18 years old under proposed updates now out for public comment.
Comments on the proposed fare updates can be submitted through links below through Tuesday, May 26, and at a series of public meetings. After comments are evaluated and addressed, the Metropolitan Council will be asked to consider the proposed updates in late August.
If approved by the Council, updates to fares for fixed route service would apply to all regional transit providers, including Metro Transit, Maple Grove Transit, Minnesota Valley Transit Authority (MVTA), SouthWest Transit, and Plymouth Metrolink.
Proposed fare changes under consideration:
• Express fare (anytime): $3
• Youth age extended to 18
• Metro micro fare (anytime): $4
• More ways to pay (credit/debit cards + Apple/Google Pay)
• Ride more, save more (new daily/monthly fare maximum)
How to comment
The Metropolitan Council will consider these fare changes and improvements to Metro Transit’s fare collection system later this year. Members of the public can comment on these specific changes through Tuesday, May 26.

Metro Transit will hold public meetings on these proposed fare changes. The meetings will begin with a presentation of the proposed updates followed by an open comment and question period.
