People of color are overrepresented among COVID cases, but drastically underrepresented in COVID medical research. (A major long COVID study this year, for example, looked at 100,000 people–96 percent of them white.) In new research funded by the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Gulin Oz plans to use MRI technology to learn more about brain health and long COVID symptoms like headaches and brain fog. She’ll also be assembling a diverse cohort of Black and brown participants. “We don’t want to learn about long COVID only in the white population,” Dr. Oz says.
