We’re growing! In partnership with the American Journalism Project, we have the opportunity to scale up the organization over the next three years, as we move from startup status to an essential news source.

Sahan Journal’s swift growth trajectory since its founding in 2019 has been extraordinary. In order to sustain our operations, we are looking to hire several great people focused on expanding our audience reach, adding editorial capacity, and building out our revenue team with major gifts and advertising.

Sahan Journal is a regional news organization: We would love to see applicants from Minnesota, or candidates with deep ties and familiarity with the diverse and immigrant communities we serve. But we welcome all applicants!

We are creating a supportive, high-energy organizational culture, one that is committed to developing the potential of our staff and honoring their wellbeing. We believe the best work is fun and deeply satisfying.

Open Position: senior editor

The senior editor will assign and edit Sahan Journal’s groundbreaking stories about education, health, local government, policing, labor, entrepreneurship, arts and culture, immigration, and more. Sahan Journal’s reporting reflects the lived experiences and information needs of immigrants and people of color.

In the next two months, Sahan Journal plans to post the following positions:

An audience growth manager who has a deep understanding of methods that attract new audiences and develop loyal readers. This highly collaborative role will bridge the editorial and revenue teams to guide data-driven decisions that build and sustain audiences. We’ll be seeking an individual experienced in reaching nontraditional audiences, innovating on social media platforms, and analyzing performance metrics. The ideal candidate will start with an appreciation for the power of authentic local news.

A donor engagement manager to design an individual giving program that encourages higher levels of support for Sahan Journal, focusing on gifts of $1,000 or more. This position will work closely with the membership manager and the managing director of development and operations to increase philanthropic engagement and deepen relationships through strategic communications, events, and touch points throughout the year. A passion for Sahan’s mission, a true interest in meeting with people, and great writing skills are key to this role. Major gift coaching and training is available through our partner networks to grow someone into this work, if needed.

In 2021 Sahan Journal added our first director of advertising and sponsorship. This is such a large growth area in the organization, we need to add a sales and marketing associate to support and deliver on advertising partnerships and  corporate sponsorship.  A strong candidate will have high proficiency in Google Analytics, Google Ad Manager, WordPress, Mailchimp, and Salesforce. and experience in digital advertising and building and growing relationships.

A creative and flexible operations associate to provide a wide range of operations and strategic support to the executive director, revenue leads, and the board of directors. Experience in nonprofit human resources, financial administration, digital tools, and Google suite would be an asset for this role.
