November marks National Family Caregivers Month, a time to recognize the millions of Americans who step up every day to help loved ones live independently at home and in their communities. In Minnesota, that commitment is especially clear: one in five adults (more than 931,000 people) are family caregivers.
Family caregivers provide an estimated 500 million hours of unpaid care each year in Minnesota. They help with everything from managing medications and arranging transportation to assisting with personal care tasks like bathing, dressing, and feeding. In fact, 61% of Minnesota caregivers provide hands-on personal care, yet only 12% receive any training to do so.

The financial and emotional toll is significant. 80% of caregivers pay out of pocket, spending an average of $7,200 annually—about a quarter of their income. One in three report financial setbacks, such as taking on debt or draining savings. And for the 74% who also work full- or part-time, many must reduce hours or leave the workforce entirely.
Caregiving looks different across families and communities. For many Minnesotans, caring for loved ones is a matter of family tradition. But language barriers, limited access to services, and financial hardships can make it even more demanding.
Help Is Coming
Starting January 1, 2026, Minnesota’s new Paid Family and Medical Leave program will provide up to 12 weeks of paid leave to care for a loved one or recover from a serious health condition. Workers can combine family and medical leave for up to 20 weeks per year, with partial wage replacement ranging from 55% to 90% of regular pay. The program covers nearly all workers—including full-time, part-time, temporary, and seasonal employees—and offers job protection and continued benefits during leave.
