Thousands of mourners filled a south Minneapolis block on Wednesday night during a vigil for a woman who was fatally shot by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent earlier in the day.
The woman, who those at the vigil identified as Renee Good, was stopped on Portland Avenue near E. 34th Street on Wednesday morning when ICE agents surrounded her car. A video shared with Sahan Journal shows her vehicle moving away when shots are fired by an agent near the front of the car.
The Department of Homeland Security said the driver tried to run over an officer, who feared for his life and fired his gun.
More than a thousand people gathered Wednesday, Jan. 7, for a vigil at the site in south Minneapolis where a woman was fatally shot by an ICE agent earlier in the day. Mourners packed a block of Portland Avenue near E. 34th Street, chanting the name of Renee Good, who was shot while trying to drive away from ICE agents surrounding her SUV. A second person in the vehicle was also injured. The vigil organized by the Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Committee (MIRAC) began at 5 p.m. and stretched into the night as a group broke off to march towards downtown Minneapolis. #icemn#fatalshooting#minneapolis
But those in the crowd said Good was an observer, trying to protect immigrants and did not pose a threat to federal agents. And they called on elected officials to prosecute her shooter.
Vigil attendees chanted, “Renee Good!” and “Lock Him Up!” referring to the federal agent who shot Good. Some blew whistles, held candles and played musical instruments. Others placed flowers and lit candles at the spot where Good’s vehicle crashed after she was shot.
At the vigil, organized by the Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Committee, speakers urged Minnesotans to honor Good and support immigrants by training for future interactions with immigration agents.

“It is time that we band together more now than ever before,” said Toshira Garraway, founder of Families Supporting Families Against Police Violence. She said the Trump administration is “sabotaging our communities and our families right now.”
“As an organizer I understand how important it is that people show up because it demonstrates courage and I feel like there’s a hope to inspire other people to be courageous too,” said Paige Ingram, a member of the Movement for Black Lives.
Kelsey Sveum, a vigil attendee, said she felt “enraged” when she watched video footage of a federal agent shooting and killing Good. She brought her two children, 12 and 8, to the vigil because “they’re our future and it’s definitely affecting them,” she said.
