Sen. Amy Klobuchar is widely expected to secure the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party’s nomination for governor after she faces off tonight against six other candidates.
The Republican contest for governor is competitive. Three leading candidates — former MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell, Minnesota House of Representatives Speaker Lisa Demuth and Army veteran and former health care consultant and marketer Kendall Qualls — will compete against five others for the Republican nod tonight.
Demuth or Qualls could make history tonight if Republican voters decide to go with them; No candidate of color for Minnesota has ever won a gubernatorial primary.
But Lindell has arguably the biggest endorsement in this race, that of President Donald Trump, and he’s ahead of all other candidates in multiple polls. Lindell made his name in his MyPillow infomercials and, eventually, in right wing media spreading conspiracy theories about the 2020 presidential election.
Qualls did receive the state Republican Party endorsement after a heated convention that included 10 rounds of voting. Demuth, who has served in the state legislature for seven years, leads all candidates in fundraising.
Polling places close at 8 p.m. Election results will be automatically updated approximately every 10 minutes throughout the evening.
