It all started with one tweet, and since then Twitter has been buzzing with anger.

Imran Garda, South African former presenter for Al Jazeera English, didn’t make many Kenyan friends on March 11 when he tweeted this:

The tweet appears to be poking at Western media’s coverage of last week’s general election and its perceptions of the whole country. But many Kenyans failed to grasp Garda’s sense of humor and sarcasm.

After suffering a Twitter abuse from Kenyans on Twitter, better known as #KOT, for the past two days, Garda was compelled to respond to the #KOT protest.

Nonetheless, Garda, a walking satire himself who once wrote “9 Signs the Journalism on Africa You’ve Just Encountered Is Trash,” learned an important social media lesson the hard way.

No one tried to save Garda even when Riyaad Minty, head of social media at Al Jazeera, called for action by starting the hashtag #SaveImranGarda2013.

Journalist George Obulutsa ends with a good Twitter advice for Garda, and for people of all ages.
